César Martiniano

César Martiniano was born in the Azores (Angra do Heroísmo) in 1995. He participated in several visual arts and painting ateliers since he was a child. But scared to try his artistic career, he attended the Science and Technology course in secondary school. Making art just as a hobby, in 2013 the opportunity arose to participate as a Young Creator at the Walk&Talk 2013 Festival, in Ponta Delgada. Through this experience he decided to give his life a more creative direction and in 2016 he ended up graduating in Graphic Design at ESAD (Caldas da Rainha). In this period he was also curator of the collective exhibition “Cena das Latas”.

From the end of 2016 to the end of 2018, in addition to working as a graphic designer, he painted several murals on Terceira Island and a mural in Fort Wayne (Indiana, United States), also participating in several local events related to art such as the Azure Festival, Walk&Talk, Azores Fringe Festival, Mais Jazz, Younger Angra, among others. In 2018, he was elected winner of the 6th LAB Jovem, in the Digital Arts category with the font Gama.

At the end of 2018 he moved to Porto, enrolling in the Masters in Graphic Design and Editorial Projects at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto. In 2020 he defends his master’s degree “DADA Archipelago: A humanist source without serif for expressive visual compositions.”

Today he is transitioning from working as a graphic designer and creative director in the Azores, to become a global abstract artist, freely painting his abstract vision of the world.

Artist Statement

I’m a passionate artist with a mission to stretch the boundaries of creativity using unconventional tools and a unique vision. My work, inspired by a background in graphic design and graffiti, is a journey into inner landscapes, inviting viewers to delve into their own experiences. I primarily employ acrylics on canvas or paper, often combining them with spray paint, chalk, and crayons. As a self-taught artist, I draw inspiration from nature, forming shapes and colors as my intuition dictates. My latest series, Atlantic Whispers, explores the lush palette of my native Azores, where vibrant blues and green predominate. The paintings celebrate the glory of nature while encouraging viewers to explore their inner child and embrace life with an ever-curious spirit.
