Álvaro Pérez Mulas

I have been educated with an artist father, both at home and in school. So, for me, art became the natural means of expression. However, contrary to the traditional view where an artist chooses a field of work, like sculpture in my father’s case, my approach is diametrically opposed. I believe that the medium should adapt to the idea one wants to convey. As a result, I have found myself working with photography, sculpture, video art, installations, performance, painting, or comics – whatever was needed in each case.

The materialization of my works is essentially a way of giving voice to an inner dialogue, through which I try to find answers about the course of time and its consequences on humans and their surroundings, or the transcendence and legacy we leave in our absence.

Furthermore, I also work as a teacher, which has been truly beneficial for my art, as these two facets are two sides of the same coin. My visual work is influenced by my educational perspectives, and these are entirely infused with artistic creative processes. That’s why when I talk about my work, I don’t distinguish between the two fields of action. Perhaps, therein lies the origin of my interest in the perceptual system and its biased interpretation based on vested interests, both to question it and to utilize it as a starting point, or the relationship between various media, particularly visual and literary ones.
