Eberhard Marx
“Early on, I was fascinated by the old masters and the Romantics. The precision of the depictions, the painterly mastery and the wealth of ideas. These unconditional prerequisites for their work had cast a spell over me. Deep artistic feeling and high quality craftsmanship are for me the standard for successful art.”

Born in Dresden in 1951. Eberhard Marx lived with his parents in Dresden, Bad Weißer Hirsch, until he completed the 10th grade in 1968. In 1968, he moved in with his grandparents in Rostock Warnemünde and began an apprenticeship as a ship’s electrician at VEB Warnowwerft Warnemünde. After completing his apprenticeship in 1970, he joined the People’s Navy as a “temporary soldier”. Here he served as a sailor on a torpedo speedboat until 1973. He then returned to work at the Warnow shipyard in Warnemünde as a ship’s electrician. From 1975 to 1977, he completed his A-levels at night school alongside his work at the Rostock adult education centre. From 1978 to 1980, Marx worked as a technologist in production preparation. At the beginning of 1980, he was elected to the works union management of the shipyard and was a full-time member of the cultural management. From 1981 to 1983, he attended a course in painting and graphics at the Rostock Academy of Culture in his spare time. The artistic director of this course was the Wismar painter Alfred Heth. At the same time, he was a member of the painting and drawing circle at the Warnowwerft cultural centre. His tutor in this circle was the Rostock painter Karheinz Kuhn, and in September 1983 he began direct studies at the technical college for applied arts in Heiligendamm. Here he had lessons in nature studies with Professors Heinz Wodzicka and Fritz Eisel, among others, and After graduating as a product mould designer in 1986, he moved to Dresden and began working at VEB Solidor Dresden as a designer and product development manager. In September 1987, he began a correspondence course at the University of Art and Design in Halle/Burg Giebichenstein. Marx completed this in 1993 with a university diploma in design. During this time, he moved from VEB Solidor Dresden to VEB Designprojekt Dresden. After reunification, he and two colleagues acquired the Dresden studio from VEB Designprojekt from the Treuhand and founded Designprojekt GmbH Dresden with them. In 2002, he left the company as a partner and since then has worked as an independent designer, painter and freelance lecturer. In 2005, he moved to the Rhineland with his family.
