Artwork statement / Remarks
Composition and Pose
The work depicts a head tilted upward, shown in profile with closed or half-closed eyes—a pose suggesting devotion, trance, or inner contemplation. This introspective, almost ecstatic tilt of the head stands in striking contrast to the explosive, outward-pushing visual language surrounding the head, thus creating a captivating tension between inner calm and external chaos of color.
Radical Flatness of Color
Unlike most of the photorealistic portraits in the series, this work is characterized by a largely flat, graphically reduced color scheme. The face itself is broken down into clearly defined zones of bright orange, lemon yellow, and turquoise blue, separated from one another by black contour lines—a visual language more reminiscent of screen printing, Pop Art, or digital poster effects than the otherwise dominant painterly precision of the series. This formal reduction to large, flat fields of color marks a distinct stylistic outlier within the artist’s body of work.
Hair as an Explosion of Color
The hair on the head has completely dissolved into a wild, abstract tangle of red, orange, blue, green, and violet—a sort of abstract corona of color reminiscent of fire, blossoms, or a psychedelic aura. The flowing, dripping color gradients running down from the chin and neck reinforce the impression of dissolution and fluidity, as if the figure itself were merging into the color or being swallowed up by it.
Structural Contrast: Image and Background
The embossed, metallic-bronze background, with its regular geometric texture, forms a calm, subdued frame that makes the figure’s garish color intensity stand out all the more effectively—a compositional principle already established in the gold-ground animal portraits of the series, but here combined with a significantly more expressive, less controlled focal point.
Interpretation
The combination of a meditative head posture and explosive, barely containable color can be read as a depiction of an inner emotional or spiritual outburst—perhaps a moment of intense emotion, artistic inspiration, or a psychedelic experience that manifests visually. The dripping color gradients reinforce the idea of an uncontrollable, effervescent inner state.
Conclusion
A bold, experimental work that expands the stylistic range of the series through its radical departure from photorealistic precision and its shift toward flat, Pop Art-style bursts of color, impressively demonstrating how inner emotional states can manifest themselves in unbridled color.
