David M. Stallings

“My work is unapologetically unmodern.”

David M. Stallings

A Painter’s Statement in Six Aphorisms
I.
The world is full of harsh, loud vulgarity.
I want to bring forth a soft, quiet Beauty.
II.
Sensibility leans towards the
timeless, the subtle, and the beautiful.
III.
A painting is always more than the subject it depicts.
IV.
The poetry of a thing depicted
is often more important than the thing depicted.
V.
Great work doesn’t take you to another place,
It vitalizes the place you are in.
VI.
Be it a Life self forged
Or one bound by Fate,
Two things are certain:
Life is hard, Love is Great.

Biography

When I work, my intention is to create an image that is intimate and enduring.  There are times when sketching an idea, my method is free and rapid. Other times, the process is lengthy and undergoes many changes. Some paintings I have worked on over several years.

My working method often involves putting something down, wiping it out, and repeating that process until I have built up some layers to work on. This helps me to apply various elements throughout a picture. Some elements include areas of transparent and opaque, thin and thick paint, and sharp and soft edges.

Timelessness is an important feature of my work. It is an aspect that has always appealed to me. Even in my earliest pieces, I represented scenes in a way that created a distance from the present while at the same time dealt with relevant themes like loss and friendship.

Whether in music, poetry, sculpture or painting, I always admire works that transcend their age to remain relevant and meaningful. I enjoy how they seem to be in one sense not real yet go on delivering some vital message from across the void of space and time.
