Xavier Gavaud
As a self-taught artist, curious and passionate, Xavier Gavaud’s artistic interest is organic and diverse, extending from art to music and theatre. Author of novels, short stories and poetry, his collaborations with the Magazine of Ethnology, focused around traditional sailing, flushing sparked his interest in photography in 2008. He illustrated, in part, an article he wrote on astronomical navigation. Embracing his new means of expression, Xavier Gavaud’s artistic vision allows him to develop and convey his personal outlook.
What joins our world to the next ? How do we spiritually exit our individual space and enter the real world ? In between these planes lies an empty space, a space fostering daydreams and where time itself is suspended. It is in the edge of the dream space, in this threshold, that photographer Xavier Gavaud is so deeply interested. He examines the visual dimensions of travel, dreams, paintings and landscapes, from the figurative to the abstract, from the literal to the metaphorical. Through his photographs, the melancholy of “the future” or our already outdated nostalgia, we are invited to immerse ourselves in an ideal world, a place that does not actually exist, but excites in us a feeling of hope and this another promise. He brings to life this moment of impalpable reality in which one can see a dream of life.
