Biography

Born in Ukraine in 1961, Irina Kupyrova graduated from the Painting Faculty of the Kyiv State Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture. She lives and works in the Czech Republic and also teaches in Prague. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including presentations in Germany, Spain, France, Belgium and Switzerland, as well as art fairs in Barcelona, Dublin and Paris. Her paintings are held in private collections internationally.

Artist statement

My practice offers a contemporary interpretation of classical figurative and still-life painting. I use painting to translate subtle differences between light and shade, indoors and outdoors, creating atmospheric arrangements reminiscent of leisurely summer afternoons and contemplative evenings. Inspired by Modigliani and Egyptian frescoes, I work on natural canvas that I stretch and prime myself, using high-quality oil paints to explore line, colour, texture and the emotional presence of the figure or object.
